Canberra Cryostat and Cryostat Options
CRYOSTAT INTRODUCTION
CANBERRA offers the broadest range of cryostat types in the industry. While some cryostat types are restricted for use with specific detector types, others can be used with all types of detectors. A brief description of the various types of the cryostats follows:
SLIMLINE
This is the type of cryostat that is standard for all types of detectors except the Si(Li) and the Ultra-LEGe. Slimline cryostats feature a cylindrical shaped detector chamber - preamplifier housing which is convenient for shielding and for interfacing to other equipment.
FLANGED
Flanged cryostats are standard on Si(Li) and Ultra-LEGe detectors and are optional for other types. This series includes the U-style in fixed and novel swivel-head types.
CONVERTIBLE
Based on the CANBERRA patented design, these modular cryostats allow detector configurations to be changed in the field and allow detector chambers to be detached for shipment or service. Convertible cryostats are more complex than conventional units and are thus more expensive. For various reasons, the service interval of modular or convertible cryostats is not as long as that of conventional cryostats, so they should be chosen only if they offer substantial advantages to the application.
PORTABLE
The CANBERRA Multi-Attitude Cryostat (MAC) and the Big MAC are famous for their performance, versatility, ruggedness, and reliability. The MAC and Big MAC are available in Slimline (standard) and Flanged (optional) styles.
The CANBERRA dual-port design provides up to two times the LN2 holding time of that of single port designs. Nevertheless, CANBERRA can provide single port units on special order if the application favors them. Gravity feed supply Dewars are also available for single port units.
RETRACTABLE
Si(Li) and Ultra-LEGe detectors are often used in conjunction with a customer-owned vacuum chamber for experiments involving low energy x rays or betas. Retractable cryostats make it easy to interface windowed or windowless detectors to these chambers.
ELECTRICALLY COOLED
The Cryolectric II provides a means of cooling detectors without the use of LN2.
The Cryo-Cycle™ Hybrid Cryostat and Cryo-Pulse™ 5 Electrically Cooled Cryostat are recent additions to this product group. Each cryostat includes revolutionary improvements that vastly improve the reliability and performance as compared to earlier electrically cooled cryostats.
ULTRA LOW-BACKGROUND (ULB)
Two styles of ULB cryostats are described in the ULB section of this catalog. These cryostats are designed and built for reduced background. Refer to the specification sheet and to our Application Note on Ultra Low-Background Detector Systems for more information.
ACT-II
This cryostat is designed specifically for Actinide Lung Burden Systems by locating two Ge detectors in close proximity in the same cryostat. The innovative design also makes it useful in other special applications.
OPTION INTRODUCTION
There are a variety of standard options that can be ordered with various cryostat types and there are almost limitless options that are available on special order. Here we describe a few of the most popular standard options:
EXTENDED END CAPS
End caps are available in 51 mm increments of lengths up to 305 mm. The specified lengths are "unimpeded" which is the length beyond screw heads and/or preamp covers (in the case of slimline cryostats).
REMOTE DETECTOR CHAMBER (RDC)
A standard feature on ULB detectors, the remote detector chamber provides isolation between the detector and the rest of the world (including the rest of the cryostat) by means of a 25.4 mm (1 in.) diameter neck of specified length. The RDC is useful not only for ULB detectors but for detectors operating in high radiation fields.
WINDOWS
Standard window materials are Aluminum, Beryllium, and Composite Carbon, (the last two are for low energy and wide range detectors). Optional windows, which are normally supplied with certain detectors or cryostat types, include polymer (for very low energies). The following chart shows the transmission characteristics of various windows. See the Ultra-LEGe and Si(Li) specification sheet for information on ultra-thin windows.

OFFSET NECK DEWAR
The D-30/OS Dewar can be ordered as an option for dipstick cryostat. The port on this Dewar is offset from the vertical centerline by 127 mm (5 in.) and is nominally 7 mm (0.25 in.) higher.
SPECIAL DEWAR SIZES
Although not standard, other Dewar sizes and shapes are available on special order. Dipstick Dewars which are short and/or thin are often required. Consult the factory.
