Comeld Composite to Metal Joining
Advantages
The research illustrated in this leaflet shows the potential of the Scurfi-Sculpt technology in improving the performance of a common but difficult joint:
• Comeld joints are shown to absorb more energy before failure than joints made using conventional technology
• Unlike in traditional joints the use of Comeld technology ensures that any initial failure does not result in catastrophic failure - indeed failure can be managed and predicted
Benefits
The application of the Surfi-Sculpt technology in the Comeld process has many benefits:
• The process is additive to existing technology
• It offers potential cost, time and hazard reductions in surface treatment techniques
• Joints can be designed with predictable failure mechanisms
• Damage tolerant structures can be designed
• Reliable multi-material structures across a wide range can be made
• Extends the range of applications that composites can be used for - exploiting the benefits of weight reduction with added strength
• Offers the ability to give composites a weldable metallic edge
Cambridge Vacuum Engineering
CVE has unrivalled expertise in electron beam and vacuum technology gained over 40 years of diverse industrial experience. Operatingfrom our UKfactory, near Cambridge, we design, manufacture and provide after-sales support for our extensive range of Electron Beam Welders and Vacuum Furnaces. With almost 1,000 installations in diverse manufacturing industries and research facilities worldwide we provide solutions for metal joining and thermal treatment processes. We work with clients on manufacturing projects, often from concept through to component solution and machine commission, ensuring project success every step of the way.
We work closely with our development partners extending the applications for Electron Beam Welding. Through our licensed access to TWI's EB technology we can explore how we can exploit the potential of Surfi-Sculpt and Comeld within your business.
