Closed-Loop Picomotor driver. Our modular iPico drivers and controllers provide the ability to build a system incorporating multiple standard Picomotor actuators and one or more closed-loop Picomotor actuators at the same time on the same control network. Within the iPico system, the Model 8751-CL driver controls one Model 8310 closed-loop Picomotor actuator. It has one 4-pin RJ-22 connector for the Picomotor actuator and one 25-pin D connector for the encoder and limit-switch signal. You can control up to 31 Model 8751-CL drivers with the Model 8752 network controller (pages 182-183) from a computer via Ethernet or RS-232.
The Model 8751-CL Intelligent closed-loop Picomotor driver includes companion software and example programs in LabVIEW™, Visual C++ and Visual Basic—enabling you to get up and running quickly. The DCN (Distributed Control Network) setup and diagnostic utility software allows you test and use an actuator network without doing any programming. Combining the Model 8752 iPico Ethernet controller, with the Model 8757 iPico handpad (page 183) provides an option for stand-alone operation without use of a computer. The Model 8754 joystick (page 183) is also compatible with this driver. Standard RJ-45 connectors and cables are used to connect the driver to the controller or other modular iPico modules. Direct computer control without the Model 8752 network controller can be achieved by using a Model 8722 communication adapter (page 184) and DLL's which you can download from our website.
The closed-loop Picomotor actuator can be integrated into most of our optomechanical mounts and is compatible with our translation stages. Please call us for more information on customized orders.
Model 8310
U.S. Patent #5,394,049, #6,911,763, & #5,410,206
The Model 8310 closed-loop Picomotor actuator and Model 8751-CL Intelligent closed-loop Picomotor driver are ideal for applications where closed-loop control and position calibration is required. With an integrated rotary encoder and forward and reverse limit switches, this unique device offers the best attributes of the standard Picomotor actuator—<30-nm resolution, >5 lbs (22 N) of force along with set-and-forget long-term stability—with the added benefits of exceptional accuracy and +1-um bi-directional repeatability over the entire half-inch travel range.
Choose between operating the Model 8310 closed-loop Picomotor actuator in closed-loop mode where it can hold a set position, or command it to move a specified distance. You can also choose between position- or velocity-profiled movement. Either way, when the actuator reaches its target location, the controller will adjust the motor to the precise requested encoder count and then stop motion. Even if you keep the servo loop enabled, the motor will only move in response to any system disturbances which cause rotation of the screw. Because the inherent resolution of the motor is finer than the resolution of the encoder, zero-count encoder error is always achieved. You can query the encoder to determine the rotation of the screw at any time.
