Case Study: Chico's Distribution Center - 1

SORTATION DRiVES SUCCESS AT NEW CHICO’S DISTRIBUTION CENTER Across all its brands, Chico's has been experiencing sustained growth, which it anticipates will continue: The company plans to add a hundred retail outlets per year for the next five years, and expects annual direct-to-consumer sales growth of over 30 percent. To support this growth, Chico's has made major investments in its supply chain and warehouse automation capabilities — investments which include a state-of-the-art sortation system from the BEUMER Group. Chico's FAS (www.chicos.com) is a leading specialty retailer of private branded, sophisticated, casual-to-dressy women's clothing, intimates and fashion accessories. The company has multiple strong, growing brands, including Chico's, White House/ Black Market, Boston Proper and Soma Intimates. It has over 1,470 boutiques and outlet stores in the U.S., as well as extensive catalog and online sales channels. AT A GLANCE At a glance: Chico's new distribution center uses a BEUMER Cross Belt Sortation System to seamlessly integrate retail replenishment and direct-to-consumer order fulfilment in one facility, to handle both current order demand and anticipated growth. Challenges: Chico's new distribution facility needed to support high levels of throughput and picking accuracy in one integrated process, using loop sortation to handle apparel and accessory orders, small order sizes, and picking waves that could be all retail replenishment, all DTC or combined. And it needs long-term capacity to handle major retail and DTC growth.

OUTFITTING A NEW DISTRIBUTION CENTER The BEUMER sortation system delivers 99.95% order accuracy, high throughput levels and is extremely flexible, key reasons Chico’s selected the system for DC-2. Chico’s new distribution center, DC-2, is 300,000 square feet and houses three pick towers, each storing approximately 30,000 SKUs. At Chico’s Winder, Georgia Distribution Campus, one major expansion is the new DC-2 Center, created specifically to integrate both retail store replenishment and direct-to-consumer (DTC) order fulfillment into a single omni-channel facility. DC-2 is a newly built,...

The BEUMER system server manages the sorter. A custom dashboard was created for DC-2 to track system availability, wave status and other data. BEUMER s state-of-the-art induction technology dynamically adjusts the acceleration and speed of each induction belt to cleanly induct items onto the sorter. The BEUMER Belt Tray (Cross Belt) Sortation System is a high-performance, high-throughput system with extensive use in retail and DTC applications: Over 75 installations worldwide, including the majority of cross belt systems installed for retail and DTC applications in the U.S. over the past...

CUSTOMIZATION FOR OPTIMAL RESULTS BEUMER optimized the sorter destination chutes to make maximum use of the available facility footprint. The destination chutes feature a “double-double” design: each chute has two levels with two chambers per level, to maximize pack-out efficiency. UNIQUE CROSS BELT CARRIAGE TECHNOLOGY CUSTOM-DESIGNED DESTINATION CHUTES BEUMER’s cross belt uses a high-efficiency, on-demand contactless energy system to transfer power from the stationary sorter track to each moving sorter tray. BEUMER worked closely with Chico’s to optimize the product destination chutes to...

PROVEN RESULTS FROM BEUMER BEUMER SOLUTION In the first full year of its operation at DC-2, the BEUMER System has fully delivered on the performance that Chico’s needs. Currently the sorter’s average monthly throughput is close to 2 million units, and in the six weeks of the most recent busy season leading up to Cyberweek, the sorter’s weekly peak rate was an average of 530,000 units. In addition, during the past year, the sorter sustained a 98 percent availability rate, and had less than five hours of unscheduled downtime in the second half of the year. This uptime, combined with the...
