FR Strategist 2011 - 1

The hottest news on fire resistant composites FR Strategist Winter 2011 In this issue • CompositeBuild.com • Composite Advantage FRP rail station platform • New! Derakane™ 610-C 200 resin • IBC listing and labeling program launches ashland.com Architects and builders around the world are working to invent environmentally-friendly technologies and products that are not only efficient and cost-effective, but also provide design freedom and flexibility. It was from this movement toward “green” technology that the Ashland-sponsored CompositeBuild.com website was born. CompositeBuild.com was developed and launched in 2010. The site was created to expand the use of composites in the building and construction market. Ashland believes that converting traditional building products to composites is one of the most effective ways to grow the FRP pie. According to McGraw-Hill Construction’s Green Outlook 2011: Green Trends Driving Growth Report, “The U.S. green building market is accelerating at a dramatic rate. The value of green building construction starts was up 50% from 2008 to 2010 – from $42 billion to $71 billion – and represents 25 percent of all new construction activity in 2010. According to projections, the green building market is expected to reach $135 billion by 2015.” Ashland recognized this opportunity and developed a strategy to grow the use of composites in this burgeoning segment. Their plan focuses Ashland sponsors CompositeBuild.com on raising awareness among designers and architects by specifically targeting the rapidly emerging green building materials market driven by sustainable building initiatives such as the LEED program. CompositeBuild.com allows designers, architects and builders to learn more about composite building materials by taking a virtual tour through either a residential or commercial building. During the tour, the user can select various building products and learn of the benefits composites offer in the application. The user is also provided with a list of regional fabricators of the products and can link directly to the fabricator’s website. “We introduced this website to help connect those who specify and source building products with composite manufacturers who participate in that market,” said Ted Harris, President, Ashland Performance Materials. “This effort truly assists designers, architects and engineers with finding composite material solutions for their creative building plans.” CompositeBuild.com website home page continued on page 2

The CompositeBuild.com website is open to all composite building materials manufacturers. Fabricators of composite building materials or their distributors can be listed on the website free of charge. “The site will be most valuable to the end user if there are many choices so we are continuing to look for quality composite and building construction products especially those with a green angle,” says Bob Moffit, Senior product manager at Ashland. Those interested in learning more about CompositeBuild.com should visit the website or contact Bob Moffit at rlmoffit@ashland.com....
