Channel geometry of a cyclic overhaul Mr. Kummer, Quality Manager at Ferrostaal is responsible for the execution of these tasks. Mr. Kummer and Ms. Hillburger were impressed by the fl exibility of the API system, which can be set-up in just a few minutes. Rapid start-up, easy mobility of the system (the tracker head weighs only 8,6 kg) has “relieved” many measurement procedures. Since the API system is compatible with most major measurement soft- ware packages, Ferrostaal was able to integrate the API Tracker3 with their existing software (Metrolog) without costly re-training for the operators. “The Laser tracker not only makes the status results possible for us, but is also the driving force behind the acquisition of a modern laser-based measurement system,” states Dieter Zellin, Production Manager at Ferrostaal Maintenance Eisenhüttenstadt GmbH. “It is also used with the stock takings before the recovery of the work pieces. Naturally we use the API Laser Tracker with the Formund tolerances - this kind of mea- surement was not available to us with the instruments which we used before.”Ferrostaal Maintenance Eisenhüttenstadt GmbH uses the Laser Tracker not only for the overhaul of their machines, but also for their customers’ industrial grinding machines – such as the neighbouring steel plant ACELO- ER.Another application involves the roller apron machines used in casting plants. Here, Ferrostaal employees use the Laser Tracker to examine the quality of the rollers. Ferrostaals customers include SMS DEMAG AG, Renk and Vattenfall. Their transmission cases and special fi ttings are delivered to customers for pro- cessing in the metallurgy, gear construction, as well as in the energy and open cast mining sectors. Here, the Laser Tracker worked particularly well during the measurement of form and position tolerances of the large cast parts.
