Inspection measurements of a large production machine at Ferrostaal Maintenance Eisenhüttenstadt GmbH Ferrostaal Maintenance Eisenhüttenstadt GmbH, is a major metallurgy plant based in Eisenhüt-tenstadt, Germany. Ferrostaal has been successful for decades in the machine and plant engi- neering sector and for industrial maintenance of assemblies and plants. Ferrostaal primarily offers its services to customers within the extractive metallurgy or metalworking industry. These services include work pieces, new constructions and plants with large dimensions, led by profi t centre departments in the engineering industry, which supply mechanical manufacturing and service and assembly to industrial plants. For example complex modernisations and new constructions are projected and accomplished by plants in the steal and roller mill applications.Ferrostaal Maintenance Eisenhüttenstadt GmbH fi rst became aware of laser trackers while searching for a measurement system to verify their machine tool repair processes. In the spring of 2007, an API Laser Tracker was purchased for production and quality assurance. The tracker was fi rst used for the preventative maintenance on their own machine tools, including their numerically controlled (NC) large production machine tool.The production machine enables the treatment of work pieces up to 28 m long; the API Laser Tracker measures the geometry of the production machine - both the tower and the spindle.
