::: Application Flash Viscosity of Automotive Brake Fluid The viscosity of brake fluids is a critical parameter for passenger safety. The SVM™ 3001 offers unbeatable fast and reliable viscosity testing at all required temperatures and features automatic calculation of the Viscosity Index. Different brake fluids - different specifications Brake fluids - or generally: automotive hydraulic fluids - are liquids used mainly in brake systems and clutches of road vehicles. There are three types with different compounds which are not miscible with each other. SVM™ saves time and costs by simultaneous measurement of viscosity and density, the calculation of various additional parameters and fast temperature changes for QC as well as for R&D. Polyglycolether / Borate Ester Based Fluids: This is the most frequently used type all over the world. The main components are glycol (a bivalent alcohol), glycol ethers, borate esters and additives. These fluids are described in DOT 3, DOT 4 respectively DOT 5.1, specified by the United States Department of Transportation (US DOT respectively DOT). The main difference between these three specifications is simply a different ratio of the main components glycol and borate ester to the additives. Their basic substances are polysiloxanes or silicium based polymers. These DOT 5 liquids are specified according to MIL-PRF-46176, FMVSS No. 116 and SAE J1705. Mineral Oil (LHM) and Synthetic Fluids (LHS): These liquids are based on highly refined mineral oils or on synthetic oils. They are used from some vehicle producers for brake and clutch systems but also for power steering and suspension; further they are used in construction equipment. Specifications are according to ISO 7308 and vehicle manufacturer standards.
