The tachometer (tach) outputs a set number of puises (20 PPI) for each rotation it makes. The AccuVision camera requires a tachometer resolution of 20 puises per inch. This tells your camera the precise speed of the conveyor, which allows the camera to determine the exact position of a package as it moves through the scanning area. The tachometer typically used to provide precise transport speed information to the system is illustrated below.
Your camera will use one of the following methods to signal the presence of packages in the scanning area:

P Your camera system may use AUTO TACH (a function of software) or DIRECT TACH (an input from the transport) instead of a tachometer. When either of these forms of package tracking is used, you will not need to install a tachometer device as outlined in this section.

While the directions for mounting your tachometer are dependent upon the conveyor's layout, follow the guidelines below as closely as possible when installing the tachometer:
Most transport systems use several conveyors. Be sure to mount the tach so that it contacts the conveyor that is directly below the camera (See above).
Mount the tach on the underside of the conveyor, away from areas where the conveyor bows downward. A good place to mount the tach is on one end of the conveyor, underneath the drive shaft.
