Feeder Protection and Control REF615 Relion® 615 series
REF615 is a dedicated feeder IED perfectly aligned for the protection, control, measurement and supervision of utility substations and industrial power systems. REF615 is a member of ABB's Relion® family and a part of its 615 protection and control product series. The 615 series lEDs are characterized by their compactness and withdrawable design. Re-engineered from the ground up, the 615 series has been designed to unleash the full potential of the IEC 61850 standard for communication and interoperability of substation automation devices.
Application
REF615 provides main protection for overhead lines, cable feeders and busbar systems of distribution substations. It fits both isolated neutral networks and networks with resistance or impedance earthed neutrals. As of now, the REF615 suite consists of six standard configurations to suit your current and forthcoming feeder protection requirements.
Protection and control
REF615 offers directional or non-directional overcurrent and earth-fault protection. It also features overvoltage, undervoltage and residual overvoltage protection, thermal overload protection, sensitive earth-fault protection (SEF) and transient-measuring earth-fault protection including detection of intermittent earth-faults in cable networks. Finally, the REF615 incorporates a flexible three-phase multi-shot auto-reclose function for automatic extinction of arc faults on open-wire overhead lines.
Enhanced with an optional plug-in card, REF615 offers a fast three-channel arc-fault protection system for arc flash supervision of the circuit breaker, cable and busbar compartment of switchgear cubicles.
REF615 also integrates basic control functionality, which facilitates the control of one circuit breaker via the
lED's HMI or remote control system. To protect the IED from unauthorized access and to maintain the integrity of information, the IED has been provided with a four-level, role-based user authentication system, with individual passwords for the viewer, operator, engineer and administrator level. The access control system applies to the front panel HMI, the web browser based HMI and the PCM600 IED setting and configuration tool.
Standardized communication
REF615 genuinely supports the new IEC 61850 standard for inter-device communication in substations. It also supports the industry standard Modbus® protocol, DNP3 and IEC 60870-5-103.
The implementation of the IEC 61850 substation communication standard in REF615 covers both vertical and horizontal communication, including GOOSE messaging and parameter setting according to IEC 61850-8-1. The substation configuration language enables the use of engineering tools for automated configuration, commissioning and maintenance of substation devices. For time-critical applications REF615 supports synchronization over Ethernet using SNTP or over a separate bus using IRIG-B.
